Briab welcomes bill to study possibility of introducing BIM requirement in Sweden

On October 1, Adnan Dibrani (Social Democrat) submitted a bill “Införande av krav på BIM” (Introduction of Requirement for BIM) to the Swedish parliament. The bill proposes that the parliament investigates the possibility of introducing a requirement for BIM in Sweden. Briab welcomes the bill, and urges the parliament to support it.

BIM as a digital working method has existed in the construction industry since about the year 2000, and subsequently, more and more AEC disciplines have gotten onboard – including fire protection, which recently joined the move to digitalization. At Briab we have known for years that BIM is the way forward for the entire construction industry, and have pushed numerous initiatives to ensure this happens and to increase knowledge of BIM in our own discipline. We work on the international stage, and we see that many countries have strategies in place to drive digitalization in the industry. Countries like the U.K. already demand BIM and key datasets in digital form for fire protection.

The  unbroken chain of information

The digital working processes that make up BIM improve communication between disciplines, and are a method where every actor has access to the same data – which is updated continually. The high precision ensured by BIM minimizes misunderstanding and mistakes, as well as delays and extra costs. The working process makes it possible for important building Information to be stored for future maintenance. Consequently, quality is improved not only in the construction process but also during possession and maintenance. This in turn means secure living environments – that are both climate-smart and economically sustainable – for both residents and tenants.

From insight to reality

Aiming to advance our industry, Briab has led and participated in important development projects for digital fire protection. We have also initiated the development of digital tools required for work with digital fire protection information, with the product Bimfire Tools. We hope that the bill submitted to parliament will help additional actors see the benefit of overarching BIM work throughout the industry and that the parliament prioritizes the issue.
