Hubben, Uppsala Science Park

Hubben – The Hub – is a new lab and office building at the Uppsala Science Park. For the businesses at the park, which specialize in biotech, materials science, medicine and IT, Hubben offers a natural meeting place for inspiration, development and collaboration. It’s a multi-purpose building, with spaces for innovation, conferences and a restaurant, and is located just a stone’s throw from the Uppsala University Hospital. The project was nominated for the 2018 Construction of the Year Prize, which is awarded by Byggindustrin, the leading magazine for the Swedish construction industry.

The Project

The project was a divided contract, which has given the building its special character. It is unusual that projects are executed this way, because collaboration often proves difficult. However in the case of Hubben, it was the other way around. In this design-and-build project, many matters were solved between the contractors, which created a direct contact between the client and the contractors that otherwise would not have existed. The result: a time- and cost-efficient building.

Environmental Certification

The building was designed in accordance with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum – the highest level in the international environmental certification system. Environmental impact is measured by studying factors including the local environment, water usage, energy usage, materials and indoor climate.

High Security

Hubben will contain a P3-classed lab, which is the second-highest security level in a property. In the lab, tests will be taken from patients suspected of carrying serious infectious diseases. The operations require advanced security, such as a separate ventilation unit, a “super dishwashing machine” for everything that is to be removed from the lab, and custom doors with special seals that reduce the risk of leaks.

Briab’s job

In the project, Briab assisted Vasakronan with fire protection design and optimization by way of analytical dimensioning. During the design phase, the functional requirements were secured in the documents of other engineers, in a rewarding collaboration with all the participants of the engineering group.

During construction there were continual inspections, to check the building-technical fire protection throughout, which is especially important when dealing with large buildings. For the transition to the management phase, an inspection and maintenance plan was devised – in addition to the final fire protection documentation and drawings.

The project members included Andreas Johansson (assignment head), Ida Johansson (administrator), Therese Samuelsson (analytical dimensioning) and Andreas Englin (inspection/final documentation).
